READ WITH CARE

How to understand a community map

A map can help people find shared information, but a pin is not proof and does not guarantee current conditions.

01

Check date and time

Look at when the observation happened. A report from earlier may no longer describe current conditions.

02

Read the description

Separate what a contributor says they directly saw from their interpretation. A vehicle or uniform alone may not identify an agency.

03

Understand the status

Read the map’s own legend and review labels. Do not assume a category means a claim was independently confirmed.

04

Protect privacy

Do not share names, faces, license plates, private addresses, immigration status or identifying details.

WHAT A MAP CAN’T TELL YOU

Context matters.
One pin is not a conclusion.

Community maps are made from reports shared by individuals. Reports can be delayed, incomplete, duplicated or mistaken. A map may not show every event, and an area without a pin does not prove nothing happened.

  • Do not treat a report as an official government record.
  • Do not assume a report is current just because it is visible.
  • Do not approach, follow, photograph or confront anyone to verify a report.
  • For urgent personal safety concerns, contact a trusted local organization or emergency service as appropriate.
